Many of us equate solar power with hi tech but some solar powered ideas are anything but. In developing countries near the equator, people are being taught to use a solar water sterilization technique that basically involves placing a plastic water bottle on a hot tin roof for several hours. The clean drinking water that this provides can greatly reduce the incidence of water borne disease. Eight hours of UV rays and heat can kill off the bacteria that cause cholera, dysentery, and typhoid.
Solar ovens are somewhat more complex. The fact that NGOs can teach local people how to build them is a big deal. Solar cookers are great for the environment because they reduce the need for combustible fuels like wood. This means that families have less daily labor and also less smoke in their home. An extremely simple solar oven recently won a design award over some much more complicated projects.
